Being one of the key contributors to the economic growth of the Maldives, the tourism sector flourished during 2013. Although 2012 experienced a slowed down growth, 2013 recorded positive trends including an impressive growth rate in international tourism arrivals. And most notably, the escalating demand in the tourism market combined with continuous efforts from the government and private sector lead to the achievement of the “one million tourists” target in 2013; a significant milestone in the year 40 year long history of Maldivian tourism. Matching the world class product, further developments in infrastructure, accommodation capacity and services of new airlines are some of the key components that assisted the country in achieving the appreciable target.

Maldivian Tourism industry

Unlike the sluggish growth in the tourism sector during 2012, the year 2013 has been a million dollar industry. Not only was there an exceptional growth in international tourist arrivals, but also Maldives reached its one million tourist milestone on 24th of November 2013. And the year ended with an impressive new record of 1,125,202 inbound international tourists.

Arrivals to Maldives 2014

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives saw an increase of 11.6% during the first two months of 2014 compared with the same period of 2013, reaching a total of 216,001.

Out of the 435 tourist accommodation establishments registered in the Ministry at end February 2014, a total of 315 establishments were operational. These include 104 tourist resorts (23,496 beds), 19 hotels (1,626 beds), 145 guest houses (1,988 beds) and 162 safari vessels (2,684 beds).
